Hi Gardeners
Let’s build soil!
Here are some basic soil prep. considerations for 90% of San Diego County Soils.
This is a general guide for unimproved soil.
MATERIALS
Compost 2″- 4″ Deep overall – Helps change Ph, Water retention, Improves soil structure, Nutrition, Food for soil organisms
Gypsum Per bag instruction – Lowers Ph, Flocculates soil particles, Improves water percolation
General Fertilizer 1 pd./ 1,000 thousand square feet. Length, in feet x width, in feet = Square feet
NPK 20-20-20
As deep as is reasonable incorporate, mix in, all of the above. A rototiller or larger implement would help. Turning the soil at least 1 Shovel full deep is an option. The tilling can be done on a spot basis or a whole vacant property.
You can inoculate or distribute Mycorrhiza and worms to ensure a good biological start.
Mulch, 4″ min, or plant ground cover. This controls 90% of Annual weeds, Conserves water, Builds soil, Lowers temp., Lowers overhead while Increasing the quality of the plants and overall landscape. Seems like a good idea…
